Mission San Juan Capistrano Traditional Latin Mass

Instructions for Mission San Juan Capistrano Traditional Latin Mass

At Mission San Juan Capistrano, there is a Novus Ordo parish, having a church that is a "replica" of the stone mission church destroyed in an earthquake in the early 1800s. The Traditional Mass is offered in what's called the "Serra Chapel", which is in one of the original adobe buildings on the historical mission grounds proper.

The mission grounds are behind the parish church, surrounded by walls. It's not easy to find, and there's no signage or anything at the parish church that says something like "you might be looking for the Serra Chapel, which is on the mission grounds proper, behind this church". The parish has a 7:30 AM Novus Ordo mass, so tourists arriving early will be easily misled. If you visit the web-site at http://www.missionsjc.com/, you will find the mass schedule for the Novus Ordo parish, but no mention is made of the Traditional Mass at the mission itself.

Just for your information, the Serra Chapel is quite small, long and narrow. The altar is a carved-wood and guilded piece more than 300 years old, having been imported from Europe. It alone is worth the trip. It is being re-guilded now, which we are told is normally required every 200 years or so for guilded wood.
